The Hundred Years' Sutras.21.VIETNAMESE TRANSLATE ENGLISH BY=VIETNAMESE BUDDHIST NUN=THE WOMEN OF THE SAKYA CLAN CHAN TANH. Vietnamese translation by Thich Tam Chau *** VOL 1 1.- Salt-Eating Fools Once upon a time, there was a fool who went to someone else's house to play and was happily entertained by his master and made rice for him. While eating, the food is a bit bland, the fool seems displeased, criticizing it as having poor taste. The owner heard and understood, sent someone to bring more salt. Bring it up, the fool adds salt to the dish. Eating well, the fool thinks: "Perhaps this delicious taste is due to the salt. Giving little is so delicious, let alone giving a lot!” Fools who do not understand anything, think like that, eat salt without, blistered mouth, become sick. Non-Buddhists have heard that abstaining from eating and drinking will attain enlightenment, and then stop eating for seven or fifteen days, only causing hunger for the body and not benefiting the Way. Just like a fool eats no salt, no different. 2.- FOR MILK Once upon a time, there was a fool who wanted to spend milk for guests. He thinks: "Every day, the milk is stored in the box, the milk every day has no place to store it, and it becomes sour again, it's better if we just keep it in its stomach, when we invite guests, we will squeeze it out, it's better! " Having thought that, he immediately led the cows to tie in one place. About a month after inviting guests to come, he brought the cow to milk, the cow's udder was dry, there was not a drop of milk, the new-guest was angry, some laughed indescribably. The fool, who wants to practice giving, says, "When I'm very rich, I'll give in no hurry!" Before they could collect enough money, they were caught by greed, flood, fire, robbers, robbers, or died before trying to give alms. It's like a fool who spends milk! 3.- HAVED FIRST Once upon a time there was a fool who had no hair. One day someone hit his head with a pear branch two or three times and broke his head, the pain was so great that the other person silently endured it, unable to avoid it. The neighbor saw this and asked: "Why don't you avoid, let people break their heads like that?" The other replied, "That man is stupid, arrogant, and confident, seeing that my head has no hair and thinks it's a stone, so he broke my head with a pear branch!" The neighbor said, “You are a fool, yet you call him a fool. If you're not stupid, why don't people break their heads and avoid them?" People who practice the Way of Liberation, do not practice Faith, Precepts, Literature, and Tue fully, only modifying the majesty and praying for benefits. Like a fool who lets people break his head, doesn't avoid it, but calls people stupid! 4.- FUCK IS DEATH ONLY Once upon a time there was a fool who married a beautiful and loving wife, but the wife still did not trust and love her. After being married for a while, the wife had an affair with another man. Her own heart was too strong, the wife wanted to leave her husband, followed the call of her lover, then secretly told an old woman: "Ma'am, after I left, you helped me find a dead man's corpse. -another woman, put it on the bed and tell my husband I'm dead!" The old woman agreed. When her husband was away, she kept the dead body on the bed. When the husband returned, she said, "Your wife is dead!" The husband came to see, believed that his wife was dead, had compassion, wept for his brain, bought oil and firewood for cremation, picked up the bones and put them in his pocket, and carried them around with him day and night. Some time later, the color of love faded, the wife returned to her old home and told her husband: "Dear brother, I was your wife before!" The husband replied, "Ma'am, my wife died a long time ago, you are a stranger, you claim to be my wife, right?" The wife said two or three times the husband still did not believe. Outsiders listen to heresies, passionately think of it as true, determined not to change. Even though when they hear the orthodox they still don't believe it, accept it..., just like the other husband is no different. 5.- THINKING TO SEE RIVER WATER Once upon a time there was a fool, one day he was so thirsty - so thirsty that his eyes became dizzy, and when he saw the sunlight, he thought it was water - and wanted water to drink, so he ran to the bank of the Sindhu River. Here, he stood watching the river, not drinking. The man by the river saw this and asked, "You are thirsty, now that you have water, why don't you drink?" The fool replied, "You can drink it all, I'll drink it! The river water is too much, I can't drink it all, so I don't drink!" Everyone laughed. The outsider religion is too logical, for he cannot fully keep the precepts of the Buddha and dare not accept it, so he will not be able to produce anything in the future and have to circulate in birth and death. This and that fool are no different! 6.- I DID NOT BURN Once upon a time there was a fool who raised seven children. One day a child died. Seeing the dead child, the other wanted to leave it alone at home and go somewhere else. The neighbor saw this and said: "Birth and death are two ways, you should arrange to bury in a far place, why do you intend to leave it at home and want to go somewhere else?" When a fool hears this, he thinks: "If you can't leave it at home, you have to bury it, then kill another child and weigh two heads!" Thinking about it, the fool immediately killed the other, left the two heads, carried to a distant field and buried. At the time, everyone laughed and feared. Those who practice the path of liberation, break one precept, are afraid to repent, are silent, conceal themselves, and say they are pure. Someone knows to say: "People who practice the path of liberation keep the forbidden precepts like keeping a pearl, not letting it fall or chip. Now that you have broken the precepts you have received, why don't you repent?" The other replied, "If you have to repent and commit again, then confess your sins as well!" Like the fool, here too! 7.- RECEIVE AN EMPLOYEE Once upon a time, there was a man with a beautiful figure, intelligent, rich in wealth, and the people praised him. Some stupid people see him like that, claim to be my brother - because he has property, use whatever he wants - Then because the loan has to be paid back, he says it's not him. The neighbor said: "You are a fool, when you need to use the property, call people brother, when you have debt, say it is not you?" The fool replied, "I want to get your money, so I accept it as you, not you! Having to carry a debt called you do!" Everyone laughed. Outsiders listen to the Buddha's good words, steal as their own. When people nearby tell them to practice, they don't do it, saying: "I'm taking advantage of the Buddha's words to transform sentient beings. really nothing, how to practice time?" Like the fool, so is this. 8.- STEALING THE KING'S Shirt Once upon a time, a barbarian stole things from the king's storehouse and ran away. The king sent people everywhere to find and bring them back. The king asked, "Where did your other shirt come from?" – The baron replied, “This garment is a treasure left by my forefathers!” - So you wear it? - said the king. People wear: Sleeves are worn at the knees, the back of the shirt covers the head. The king saw that it was indeed a stolen robe that he gathered his courtiers, said clearly the head and tail, and then turned to the servant: "If this shirt was left by your forefathers, when you should know how to wear it, why would you wear it wrong-- so bad? Since you don't know how to wear it, you know it's the one you stole, not your old thing!" Borrow as an example: "King" is like "treasure-like-dharma" (truth) of the Buddha; "Everybody is a fool" is like an outsider who eavesdrops on the Buddha's righteous dharma and inserts it into his own dharma, claiming that he has it. However, because they do not understand and place the Buddhadharma upside down, below, and do not know how the dharma-character (the general in the Buddha-Dharma, the state-of-things) is. Just as a nobleman gets the king's precious robe, not knowing the turn, so do the heads and tails! 9.- PREPARATION OF FAITH-HAPPY Once a man in a crowd praised his father's virtue: “My father is kind and does not harm anyone, does not steal from anyone; speak the truth and often do alms!" A fool heard this and said, "My father's virtue is far greater than your father's!" Everyone asked, “What virtue did your father have, please tell us?” The fool replied, "My father has given up lust since he was a child and has not been tainted!" Everyone laughed and said, "How did your father give birth to you?" People who are ignorant in the world, wanting to praise people's virtues, do not know their true virtues, but instead become scornful. Fool, wanting to praise his father turns into a mistake. Here too! 10.- STORE THREE FLOORS Once upon a time there was a rich fool who did not know anything. One day, when he went to visit another rich family, he saw that their house had a three-story, high-wide, beautiful-looking house... wanted one like that. He thought, "My money is no less than theirs, why haven't I built such a house before!" When he got home, he called the carpenter and asked, "Do you know that house upstairs?" – The carpenter replied: “That house I do!” - He said: "Now you help me build a house like that!" – Carpenters accepted, went to level the ground, dig the foundation to do. The fool saw this and asked, "How are you doing?" – The carpenter replied: “Make the third floor!” - The fool said: "I don't like to make the bottom two floors, make me the top floor first!" The carpenter replied, "I can't do it: I can't make the second floor if I can't make the bottom floor, how can I do the third floor if I can't make the second floor!" - The fool tries to say: "I don't use the two lower floors, you try to make me the top floor!" At that time, everyone laughed as weird: "If you can't do it downstairs, you can't do it upstairs!" Like the Buddha's monastic and lay disciples who are lazy and do not respect the Three Jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, but want to seek the path and fruition, saying: "I only seek Arahantship, rather than asking for three results: Ana-ham, Tu-da-ham, Tu-da-huan." These disciples were also ridiculed as fools. 11.- KILLING THE CHILD In the past, there were Brahmins (6) with regard to industry, art, and visions… trusting themselves to be all-knowing. Wanting to show his virtue, he went to another country, hugged his son and cried. Someone asked: "Why are you crying?" The man replied, “In seven days this child will die. I loved it to death, so I cried!” - The people there said: "Life is difficult to know, calculation or mistake, what if it doesn't die for seven days, why do you have to cry first?" The man replied, "The sun and the moon may darken, the stars may fall, but my observations cannot be wrong!" For the sake of fame and gain, after seven days he killed his own son to prove his words. And, when the locals heard that the man was dead, everyone praised him: “Really wise man, rightly speaking is not wrong!” From there they generate a mind of trust and respect. The Buddha's disciples for the sake of their own gain and nourishment consider themselves to be enlightened, take the Dharma to fool mankind, kill the good seeds of sentient beings, disguise the virtue of compassion..., so that in the future they must suffer immensely. Like the Brahmin who wanted to test his words, killing his son to fascinate people, no different. 12.- COOKING jellies-honey Once upon a time there was a man who cooked honey, and one day a rich man came to his house, and he thought, "I'll bring this honey-water to invite him to drink!" After thinking about it, he put some water in a pot and put it on the fire, fanned it with a fan to quickly cool it down, and treated the guests. The neighbor saw this and said, "If you don't beat the fire under you, you will fan like that, how can it be cool?" Everyone laughed. Outsiders can't put out the fire of afflictions, go to work a little asceticism like lying on thorns... looking forward to a peaceful and peaceful way of life can't be done at all, just for the wise to laugh at. And, in the present suffering, the calamity is also transmitted to the next life. This is the same person who cooks honey-jelly water. 13.- SUPPORT THE ANGRY Once upon a time, there was a person sitting with many people in a house, praising a non-believer for his good conduct, but he still had two faults: one was angry, the other was working in haste. Meanwhile, the other person who was passing through the door heard his anger and entered the house, grabbed the other person, and hit him one by one. The bystanders asked, “Why do you hit people?” The man replied, “I have never been angry and worked hastily, yet this man dares to call me angry and hasty!” Bystanders said: “Wow, your angry and impulsive appearance is so obvious that you are still absconding! The one who speaks evil things to him, gives birth to such resentment, and is determined to be called a fool by everyone!" The drunkards do a lot of rioting, seeing the scorner generate hatred, testifying to their delusions and suffering, and clarifying themselves. Like a fool who abstains from listening to his own mistakes, seeing someone talking about it means he wants to hit! 14.- KILL THE GOD Once upon a time there were merchants who wanted to go to the lake and needed to find a teacher to guide them. Found it, let's go together. Passing through a large field, there is a temple to worship heaven. If you want to pass this temple in peace, you must kill a person to sacrifice. Faced with a difficult problem to solve, they pondered: "We're all close friends, why would we kill to sacrifice to heaven, now only this guru is a stranger, so let's kill him!" After thinking about it, they immediately killed it to sacrifice. After the sacrifice, they all lost their way and did not know where to go or where to go, then they were miserable and died. People of the world want to enter the "Buddha-Dharma" pool to collect precious things, and need to practice good conduct as a guru. Now destroy the good conduct, the long road of birth and death is determined not to get out, must go through the evil paths, suffer-forever. Like merchants, about to go to the lake, kill the guide, go astray, even to the point of death! 15.- MEDICINE FOR GET GROWTH Once upon a time there was a king who had given birth to a daughter, so he called the doctor in and said, "I have just given birth to a daughter, you made me a remedy, let her drink quickly!" The doctor replied, "I will give you a good remedy, and the princess will drink it right away. But, now that there is no such remedy, I have to search far; Although the medicine is slow, please do not expect. And, from now on, please don't visit the princess often, wait until I bring medicine for the princess to drink, then I personally bring the princess to an audience!" The king consented. Then the doctor immediately went to another country. Find medicine for twelve years. The medicine was brought back for the princess to drink. After drinking, the physician brought the princess to the king. The king saw the joy and thought to himself: "The doctor is really good, giving my daughter medicine to grow up so fast!" Thinking about it, the king sent a courtier to bring the treasure to the physician. At that time, everyone laughed at the king as having no mind, not knowing how to calculate the year and month, thinking that he was growing up because of drugs. The same is true of worldly people, to the wise man (good friend) said: "Now I want to seek the way, please teach me so that I can become a wise person right away!" 16. SUGAR WATER Irrigation of sugarcane In the past, two sugarcane growers swore an oath to each other: "Whoever grows good will be rewarded, whoever grows bad must be punished". One of them thought: "Cane is sweet, if you force it to water the tree, it must be sweet, well done, I will definitely win against the other!" After thinking about it, he pressed sugarcane juice to water the sugarcane hoping it would taste better, but he didn't expect the sugarcane sprouts to be damaged, the plants that had been planted were all damaged. People in the world want to seek blessings, rely on themselves to be rich, rely on power, oppress ordinary people, exploit wealth to do good deeds, and seek good results. But, they do not know that later they will not only gain nothing, but also suffer many disasters. Like a fool forcing sugar cane to water cane, both ways are lost! 17. BRING BETWEEN MONEY Once upon a time there was a merchant who owed another man half of his money. After being unable to pay for a long time, one day he went to pay, crossed a large river, and had to pay two ferry fees. When he arrived, the other person was away and did not see him, and when he returned, he had to pay those two more money. So, owed half of the money, lost four, and added the hard journey. Less debt, more loss, anyone who heard about this also laughed. People in the world seek some fame-profit, cancel great-hanh; Take care of your body for the time being, don't care about etiquette, now have a bad reputation, then you have to suffer as well! 18. UP STORE Knife sharpener Once upon a time there was a poor, wretched man, who worked in the king's office for a long time, weak and ugly in body. The king saw new pity for a dead camel. Having obtained a camel, he skinned it, but the knife was too dull to peel it, so he had to find a sharpening stone. Finding a sharpening stone upstairs, he brought a sharp knife and went down to peel it. Peel back to grind. Just like that, walking and walking, again too tired, he thought of a plan to hang the camel upstairs, near the knife sharpener for convenience. Everyone looks funny. A fool destroys the precepts, and earns a lot of wealth to do good, hoping to be born in heaven. It is like a man who hangs a camel upstairs, sharpening his knife a lot, but the result is not much. 19. GOING ON A BOAT TO LOOK Once upon a time a boatman crossed a pool and dropped a silver cup into the water. He thought, "Now I will draw the water to make a record, when I come back I will find it!" Two months later, when he came to another country, he saw a river with water and went down to find the old cup. The local who saw it asked, “What are you looking for?” The man replied, "I lost the silver cup before, but now I'm trying to get it back!" – Ask: “Where did you drop it?” – A: “When I entered the tank I dropped it in the tank!” "How long ago did you drop it!" – A: “Two months already!” – Question: “It took two months at the pool, why did you find it now and then come here?” – A: “When I dropped it, I had a water line to mark: the water where I drew first and the water here are the same, so I looked here!” The locals say: “The water is the same, but, before you dropped it elsewhere, how can you find it here!” Everyone laughed. Non-Buddhists do not practice righteous conduct, in similar good deeds, grasping the need to be obstinate is right, making the body miserable and struggling in order to seek liberation. Like a fool who lost his cup and found another! 20. SPEAK THE KING OF VIOLENCE In the past, it was said that the king was very tyrannical and did many unreasonable things in politics. The king heard that he was so angry, he did not consider who was the culprit, believed in the flatterer, and immediately arrested a sage and removed a hundred taels of flesh from his spine. After someone proved that the sage did not say that, the king's heart regretted bringing a thousand taels of meat to patch it in place. In the middle of the night, the sage groaned, and the king heard a voice asking: "Why is it so painful that it's not enough to take a hundred taels of meat and make a thousand taels?" The bodyguards replied: "Great King, if you cut off your head, even if you return a thousand heads, you will not be able to escape the death of your son. Now, even if this sage has obtained ten times more flesh, he cannot escape suffering?" Fools in this world have no fear of the next life, longing for present happiness, afflicting sentient beings, digging through hundreds of families, earning a lot of wealth to do good, hoping to eliminate sins and be blessed. Like a king who chopped off human flesh and patched it with other flesh in the hope that it wouldn't be painful, so hard to come by! 21. WOMEN WANT Children Once a woman who had one child wanted to have another child, so she asked another woman: "Madam, now who can make me have more children?" In that place an old woman said, "I can tell you how to ask for more children, by having to sacrifice to heaven!" The other woman asked, "Woman, what do you need to sacrifice to heaven?" – The old woman said: “You should kill your existing child to take blood to sacrifice to heaven and you will have many children!” That woman obeyed, was trying to kill her son to take blood to sacrifice to heaven, next to the house an intellectual saw this and scolded: "You fools have no wisdom at all, there's no way you'd never give birth to another child. Do you ever go now?" It's the same with fools in life, hoping to be born in heaven; has not been born yet, has thrown himself into the pit of fire to harm himself! (7) *** Note: (1) This series is called "Bach-Duoc Kinh". The entire content is a parable, implying to teach those who are stupid, do not understand, to go straight to the true understanding, so now it is changed to "Buddhism Fable" . The Hundred-Example Sutra is book number 209 (volume 4, pages 543-557) in the Great Tripitaka. This sutra is divided into 4 volumes, translated by Mr. Cau-Na-Pi-Di (India) into Chinese characters, in the Tieu-Qi life. This set of sutras has a few differences: 1/ The "I personally heard ..." section is left at the end of the first volume, not at the beginning as usual of the sutras. 2/ Under the title of the sutra and the last verse of the sutta, the title is called "The Venerable: The Sangha-Sina composed" which, according to the custom of gathering in the sutras, had "I heard it myself..." at the time. no editor. 3/ The Hundred-Example should have enough 100 examples, but this is only 98. Although there are differences above, but, directly perceive the content of this book is full of very good teaching implications, which we have compiled to dedicate to Buddhists. To make up for the difference above, we bring the paragraph "I myself heard..." to the beginning of the sutra to suit; draw 2 articles from another sutta and add them later to make 100 articles and, not separate the book as before, but record it in the footnote every time the book is over for easy understanding (translator's words). (2) See the Quan-Yin Sutra that has been resolved. (3) Theology of Brahma: The Brahmins have strange and different doctrines from Buddhism. (4) Five Heavens: Five Commandments: Do not kill, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not lie, and do not drink alcohol. (5) Tu-da-huan (Srotàpanna-phala): Chinese translates as "Enter-stream, Reverse-Flower, Upstream-Flower" and means a monk who goes against the current of birth and death, ordinary man joined the Order of Saints. This is the first of the four flavors of Thanh Van. Thanh-Van cultivators of the Four Truths testify to four results: 1/ Tu-da-complete. 2/ Tu-da-ham (Sakràgami), Chinese-translated as "One-laid-back": there is still a birth of Human, Thien. 3/ Anam (Angàmi), Chinese translated as "Non-returner": not born in the world of desire. 4/ Arahant (Arahat), China translates as "No-birth": no more birth and death. (6) The Hindu monastic class. See the Nirvana Sutra for clarification.
